David Bowie Conquers US Charts At Last With First-Ever #1, 'Blackstar'

The posthumous chart performance of late, great entertainer David Bowie has been categorically one for the books, with the celebrated performer racking up massive results around the globe following his death — and now he has another achievement to add to the pile, officially earning his first-ever US #1 with new album Blackstar.

As with his results in the UK and Australia, Bowie's long-overdue ascension to the top of the tree comes at the expense of previous placeholder Adele, whose acclaimed full-length 25 makes way for the Thin White Duke and graciously settles into #2, having a knock-on effect for Justin Bieber; the Canadian pop prince's album is #3 this week.

Similarly, in keeping with Bowie's efforts on global charts of late, Blackstar is far from his only album to make an impact, as compilation album Best Of Bowie makes its re-entry onto the ladder at #4. His domination isn't quite as complete in the States as it has been in the UK and here in Australia, though, with his next-highest effort, The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars, re-entering at #21, ahead of Hunky Dory (back on the chart at #57) and a debut performance for The Platinum Collection (#65), as well as Nothing Has Changed (#68) and Let's Dance (#90). Outside the top 100, his light is maintained by Aladdin Sane (#134), Low (#143) and The Next Day (#151).

Back up at the pointy end, the top 10 albums of the week also include twenty one pilots' excellent Blurryface (down two spots to #5; their previous effort, Vessel, is also hanging inside the top 30, up one rung to #28), The Weeknd's Beauty Behind The Madness (#6), Chris Stapleton's Traveller (#7), Bryson Tiller's T R A P S O U L (#8), G-Eazy's When It's Dark Out (#9) and Fetty Wap's self-titled LP, down two spots to hit the cut-off at #10.

In the Hot 100 Singles race, Bieber remains atop the pile with Sorry, back at #1 for another week, backing up with Love Yourself at #3 once again (Adele's Hello stays steady at #2). Stressed Out, by twenty one pilots, continues to hang solidly in the top five, too, gaining a rung to hit #4, while Selena Gomez's Same Old Love also enjoys a one-spot jump to take #5. Bowie does eventually make an appearance a little ways down the list as Lazarus makes its debut at #40, while Space Oddity's not far off the mark, re-entering at #42. Also making the cut for the Starman are Under Pressure (with Queen, #45) and Blackstar (entering at #78).
