It's Official: Brunswick Is The Top Suburb For Songwriters To Live

For the second year running, APRA AMCOS' annual postcode ranking has revealed that the inner-north suburb of Brunswick is the number one destination for songwriters living in Australia. 

The rankings are based on the number of earning APRA AMCOS songwriters by postcode which cover the top 30 national songwriting postcodes, top 20 fastest growing postcodes, top ten national postcodes by musical genre, top ten postcodes by state and overall state growth rankings.

Brunswick dominated the rankings again alongside Northcote which finished in second place, while Sydney's Newtown/Enmore jumped up from #5 last year to round out the top three. 

Brunswick topped the list for a number of specific music genres as well including pop/rock, classical, metal, folk, blues & roots and alternative. 

Surprisingly popular destination hub Bondi was pushed from #3 down to #6, also making way for Victorian cities Coburg and Preston in #4 and #5 respectively, though it still home to the most screen composers and urban songwriters, as well as being home to electronica and dance/techno songwriters second overall. 

Meanwhile the fellow Sydney suburb of Camperdown saw the biggest percentage growth of songwriters in the city, ranking eighth nationally.

In further proof that Melbourne dominated the postcode rankings, Footscray/Sneddon ranked as the top suburb nationally in terms of songwriter growth.

APRA AMCOS principal analyst Andrew Harris believes the result shows Footscray is a suburb to watch.

"Although Melbourne’s Inner North suburbs of Brunswick and Northcote have dominated the rankings again this year, Footscray’s nation-leading growth over the last year suggests Melbourne’s west is firmly establishing itself as a key national music hub," Harris said.

Queensland did not prove to have an impact on songwriters staying or relocating to the sunshine state this time around, having just two postcodes feature in the top 30; West End/South Brisbane/Highgate Hill and Kelvin Grove/Red Hill.

In terms of percentage growth however there was some considerable improvement, with Toowoomba ranked as the fourth highest-growing postcode nationally, while Western Australia's North Perth and Bibra Lake came in at fifth and sixth on the same list.
