Romanian PM Resigns Following Bucharest Club Fire Tragedy

Romanian Prime Minister Victa Ponta has announced his resignation after large protests of around 20,000 people called for the sacking of his government following the Bucharest club fire, which resulted in the death of over 30 people and injuries to 160 more.

According to The Guardian, a demonstration was held in Bucharest on Tuesday evening where thousands called for the PM’s resignation due to the belief that the current government is corrupt.

Many are also blaming the Colectiv nightclub fire on local authorities for failing to properly inspect clubs and public spaces, after the ceiling of the venue burst into flames during a heavy metal gig.  

“I’m handing in my mandate. I’m resigning – and implicitly my government too,” Victor Ponta announced.

“I am obliged to take note of the legitimate grievances which exist in society. I hope handing in my and my government’s mandate will satisfy the demands of protesters.”

Ponta and his government will step down as soon as a new PM is announced.

The news follows yesterday arrests of the three venue owners who have been charged with suspicion of manslaughter after prosecutors revealed that the venue was over capacity and that the fireworks let off in the club that caused the explosion were illegally installed.

The death toll now stands at 32 and 130 of the injured concert-goers are still in hospital, while dozens remain in a critical condition.
