Watch CHVRCHES' Lauren Mayberry School A Punter Who Proposed To Her At A Gig

"When you go to public places and ask women you don’t know if they want to wed you… Does that work out well for you, sir?"

Public proposals are a risky thing for anyone to undertake — spare a thought for the misguided men who have found themselves heartbroken on baseball-stadium jumbotrons because of their terrible decision-making skills — but, usually, the people involved have at least, you know, known each other for a while. And, even then, there's no guarantee that things will go according to plan.

So one has to wonder what was going through the mind of one attendee at a recent CHVRCHES gig who — sincerely or otherwise, like it matters — presented frontwoman Lauren Mayberry with a highly romantic proposal of "MARRY ME!" from the crowd.

As Consequence Of Sound notes (via Reddit), it didn't end even a little bit well for the would-be suitor, as Mayberry has established herself as staunchly intolerant of men's shit on multiple occasions. So, as expected and entirely understandably, an enthusiastic "yes" was not exactly forthcoming.

"Oh, come on," Mayberry responds to the show-goer's demand. "What’s the hit rate on that? When you go to public places and ask women you don’t know if they want to wed you... Does that work out well for you, sir?"

Telling the punter that "I assume, because you’re here, that you’d know a bit about our band," Mayberry said, "I’m very grumpy. I don’t want that shit."

"Thank you, everybody else," she continued. "Sorry for shaming that one person but if nobody tells you, you're never gonna know.

"And, luckily for me right now, I have a microphone and you don't, so it works in my favour at this particular juncture."

CHVRCHES will be back in Australia in February for next year's Laneway Festival; if we could keep the unsolicited marriage proposals out of it, that'd be swell for everybody.
