"You should be ashamed"

More Best Coast More Best Coast

Best Coast vocalist/guitarist Bethany Cosentino has taken to social media to express her disgust with a review of a recent show written by David L Garcia of the San Francisco Foghorn — the University of San Francisco student paper — calling out the scribe for sexism in the piece.

As she expressed on Facebook this morning (AEST), the source of Cosentino's frustration lies in Garcia's immediate focus on her appearance in his review, titled Best Coast, Mediocre At Most. After an attempt at justification via "music should never be a fashion show" caveat, Garcia goes on to describe Cosentino's apparel at length, leading into the summation that "the outfit was … the best part of the evening" (plus comments later about how she apparently didn't smile enough).

"Sexism is alive and well people!" Cosentino wrote in her post, accompanied by a screenshot of the offending introductory paragraph.

"This literally makes my blood boil. If you aren't happy with my show that's perfectly fine, but leave my looks + outfit out of it."

"San Francisco Foghorn you should be ashamed of yourselves for allowing a 'writer' to write this sick excuse of a live music review," she concluded.

Cue the (predominantly male) opinions of Twitter claiming that the review isn't sexist, somehow creating a circumstance in which Cosentino was forced on the defensive, having to justify her opinions about sexism to people who don't experience it on a daily basis. Fantastic work as always, internet.
