'It's Not Me, It's You' is out today

More The Meanies More The Meanies

Melbourne punk boys The Meanies are dishing up their newest album, It's Not Me, It's You (their first in 21 years) on Poison City Records today, and what better way to check out a new album than with personal explanations of each song from vocalist Link Meanie? That's exactly what the quartet are offering today, so dig into the album while reading the track-by-track.

THE MEANIES – ITS NOT ME ITS YOU

Written by Link Meanie

YOU KNOW THE DRILL

This song is about depression and the danger of becoming too dependent on another, to your own (and their) detriment.

THE SHALLOW END'S MINE

It's about letting people have their victories and not needing to win even when you feel strongly that you're in the right. Just let It go and be happy. You can take the lion share.

KILL

Sometimes you need to destroy a part of yourself to let a healthier mental situation flourish. It feels like cutting off a limb but its worth it in the long run.

FREAK OUT FOREVER

Originally written as a thank you and an apology to my first girlfriend. She put up with a lot. Very generous. It still stands.

DREAM AGE

Australian Idol, The Voice, news shows selling products, The Bachelor etc. Sigh.… vomit.… sigh again.

WHAT'S THE BUZZ INSIDE?

Well… tell me.… just be honest. It's good to get it off your chest. I love Ringo's miserly use of the cymbals on this one.

HUG AND KISS

This one's about good old conservative religion, its ungenerous, unempathetic dogma and all the associated damage.

HEY HEAD

We actually played this song in the early 90's once or twice. It had slightly different lyrics. It wasn't quite working for us back then but I think we nailed it here.

THERE'S A GAP

Our first radio single off the album. I love it but I would have chosen another song. Wally can be very persuasive. When he does the big cat eyes, I cave in.

PUNCHIN' AIR

Those poison filled people that seem to live on a diet of hate and hierarchical domination can't be reasoned with. They will die like old maggot ridden predators on the Serengeti plain.
