Celebrate the throwback format that just won't die with a bunch of great Aussie releases this October
Courtney Barnett, Bloods, The Ocean Party, Step-Panther, Fraser A Gorman, Dollar Bar and many other Aussie musical heroes are getting right behind the third annual Cassette Store Day, releasing work on the plucky retro format especially for the occasion this October.
Barnett's acclaimed full-length Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit, Bloods' Work It Out, The Ocean Party's Light Weight, Step-Panther's Strange But Nice, Gorman's Slow Gum and Dollar Bar's classic Paddington Workers Club as well as newest effort Hot Ones are among the cabal of artists casting off their iPods in favour of something a little less shuffle-able for this year's event, which sees the biggest group of industry backers behind it to date.
Indeed, Cassette Store Day III: The Rewinding (not an official subtitle) is this year repped Down Under by first-timers such as Aussie label Rice Is Nice Records, Kiwi contemporary Arch Hill and Germany's Mansions & Millions, as well as event founders Kissability and Burger Records.
In addition to the goodies up for grabs on the day itself — Saturday, 17 October — Rice Is Nice is getting in the celebratory mood with a free night-before shindig at Waywards, Newtown, on Friday, 16 October, featuring sets from Zeahorse, White Dog and Us The Band, all of whom feature on the CSD-exclusive Rice Is Nice Mixtape, Volume 3.
