More The Internet More The Internet

The death of guitar great Jimi Hendrix 45 years ago has remained a remarkably contentious event over the ensuing decades, with disputed accounts of how the music legend spent his final hours and a brief exploratory inquiry by Scotland Yard in the mid-'90s helping to sustain the myth that there might have been "more" to his untimely passing than the public was led to believe.

If anyone's going to find out, though, it'll be you, Detective Jimi Hendrix, taking on the grim task of solving the murder of, er, Jimi Hendrix, in swiftly going-viral (via BoingBoing.net) indie video game The Jimi Hendrix Case, an adventure where nobody's telling you anything and, oh yeah, literally everybody is Jimi Hendrix.

The game — which is free to download, it has to be said, because this entire thing is simply phenomenal —  popped up earlier this month on discussion forums for freeware game-creator tool Adventure Game Studio, by Benjamin Penney, a 32-year-old programmer and creator from Richmond, Victoria, who goes by the username Gurok.

Reception to the game from fellow AGS creators has been pretty enthusiastic so far, with quite a few praising the art style, narrative and overall concept of the game. Given that it looks like some fantastically mad hybrid of old LucasArts adventure games with a few Where In Time/The World Is Carmen Sandiego?-style aesthetic choices, we can't say we're surprised.

You can download The Jimi Hendrix Case here, or watch a bit of a play-through below.

And, if you want to support the creator, be sure to check out Penney's other work or take a gander at his Twitter. He spends at least some of his time making Neighbours sprites so that's something.
