This is one awesome pairing.

More Flight Of The Conchords More Flight Of The Conchords

He's already dominated the TV scene as one half of the famous music-comedy duo Flight Of The Conchords and now Jemaine Clement is making the best possible return to the HBO network with the announcement of a new show to be produced by acclaimed filmmaker, Judd Apatow.

Apatow, known for his directorial work on hugely successful comedy films such as Knocked UpThe 40 Year Old Virgin and the newly released Trainwreck, as well as his producing duties on even more projects, most notably fellow HBO program Girls, will team up with Clement and New Zealand director Taika Waititi for the new series.

Speaking to Fairfax, 41-year-old Clement said of Apatow: "People trust Judd. That's why comedians go to him."

"He understands that people have different comic ideas. So if you compare things he's directed to other things he's produced, they're quite different. Girls is totally different from This is 40. But he understands them all and he protects the person's idea and that's why people go to him."

While we can only wait and hope if Clement's comedy partner Bret McKenzie will feature in the currently untitled show, it can be confirmed the series will feature on HBO as two to four episodes — "like mini movies" — and will have a different story and characters each time, but the same cast.

"There's one about a dance competition and there's one about time travel. Each one of them is set in different time or has a different subtext," Clement said.

"It's like The Twilight Zone, but comedy...there is a theme so far in that all of the ones we've written are about time."

Clement also revealed in the interview that this show, just like the Flight Of The Conchords series, was originally pitched to New Zealand networks eight years ago to no avail.

"...They didn't even answer us!" Clement laughed.
