The beloved local act are blowing off the cobwebs once again

More The Whitlams More The Whitlams

By frontman Tim Freedman's own admission, The Whitlams have "settled into a pattern of going around the country as a four-piece once every 12 months" in recent years, and to be frank we don't really care how predictable that might make them — we're stoked that they're back in the saddle for another run around the block this September.

"It's the most raucous three weeks of the year for me and it can't come around too soon," Freedman said of the sojourn in a statement, eyes clearly focused hard on the band's planned kick-off date of Thursday, 3 September, at Newcastle's Cambridge Hotel. From there, Freedman and his long-time compatriots — guitarist Jak Housden, bassist Warwick Hornby and drummer Terepai Richmond — hit Sydney's Metro Theatre on Friday, 4 September; The Triffid, in Brisbane, on Saturday, 5 September; Melbourne's Corner Hotel on Thursday and Friday, 10 & 11 September; Adelaide's Governor Hindmarsh on Friday, 18 September, and a good, old-fashioned closer at the Revesby Workers Club on Saturday, 19 September.

It's been a shade under 20 years since The Whitlams broke through to wider acclaim with their 1997 third album Eternal Nightcap, though they'd been kicking about the local scene for a while by then, the original line-up having come together in Newtown way back in 1992. The current roster has remained consistent since 2000, and were together for the band's final two records (to date, at least) — Torch The Moon (2002) and Little Cloud (2006). There are six full-lengths all up from which the band can pull inspiration for their impending live set, so expect to hear a healthy mix of latter-day gems alongside the requisite old-school hits when The Whitlams convene once more to take us all on a trip down memory lane.

Tickets for all shows vary in price (from $38 in Adelaide to $46.85 in Sydney), and are available through a variety of outlets. For more booking information, see theGuide or check The Music App.
