Watch Kevin Bacon Chastise A Cinema Of People In The Weirdest Video You'll See Today

What is happening here

Nobody likes having their cinema experience ruined by loudmouths or inconsiderate jerks with their smartphones all bright and loud in the middle of a dark theatre, so it's unsurprising that movie houses are finding new and creative ways to drive home the message that talking and texting during a movie is a pretty big dick move.

Wait, did we say "new and creative"? Because we meant "totally insane but still incredibly wonderful because of the inexplicable involvement of Kevin Bacon". Well, even then, it's not all that inexplicable — Bacon is the star of impending indie flick Cop Car, the story of a small-town sheriff who "sets out to find the two kids who have taken his car on a joy ride". As much as that sounds like a premise rife for high-jinks, the Jon Watts-directed film is actually described as a "road thriller", so it's probably even less a real-life approximation of Wacky Races than it appears at first glance.

It's an image that is not helped by this ultra-bizarre public service announcement starring Bacon as his character in the film, the pornishly mustachioed Sheriff Kretzer, in which he warns a cinema audience of the HIGHLY ILLEGAL (apparently) pastime of talking and texting during the movies, before having the tables somewhat turned on him by his miffed crowd on account of his overly grouchy manner. Seriously.

To be fair, it really works — the sheer left-fielded wonder of the video does nothing but make the filmmakers seem like endearing people, and makes us actually pretty keen to try and hunt down Australian release details for Cop Car following its unveiling internationally on 7 August. Until then, however, we're pretty happy to just watch this PSA repeatedly and lobby Event Cinemas to start using it Down Under.
