Iconic rapper talks new film.

The highly anticipated biopic, Straight Outta Compton based of iconic hip-hop group NWA is a little over a month away from its cinema release.

Group member and famous rapper Dr Dre has spoken out on the film just a week after he did not join the rest of the original NWA outfit on stage for a live performance last week to promote the release.

According to NME, the 50-year-old artist who also serves as the upcoming film's co-producer, expressed his views while hosting his new radio show The Pharmacy, which launched on Apple Music's Beats 1 over the weekend.

"I don't want anything to pour water on my legacy, so I was against it at the beginning," Dre explained.

He went on to say it was his fellow NWA member and long-time friend Ice Cube who turned it all around.

"I read a few scripts that were just like kinda corny, but Ice Cube, he actually grabbed the bull by the horns. He went in and got the script done and I read this new script that he brung in and it was like, 'Oh, ok, I like that.'"

The inclusion of director Gary Gray who is best known for his work on a number of big films including the 2003 remake of heist film, The Italian Job as well as the popular 1995 crime-comedy Friday which also starred Ice Cube, was enough for Dre to come on board with the project.

"Let's roll our sleeves up, black out and really give these people not only what they want.' Just display everything that it took..." he said.

"...not only what it took to put that record together, but the friendship, the love that we have for each other, the betrayal and ultimately, trying to get back together and do a new NWA record before [founding member Eazy-E] passed away."

Straight Outta Compton is set for release in Aussie cinemas on August 27 — check out the trailer below.
