Kicking off the 2016 event with a bang.

More You Am I More You Am I

The annual Street Machine Summernats festival will next take place in January 2016 but event organisers have already confirmed legendary Aussie rock bands You Am I and Hoodoo Gurus will headline the event.

The two acts will lead the line-up on the main stage at the Exhibition Park in Canberra for the automotive-themed event taking place from January 7-10.

You Am I are set to open the music program on Thursday, 7 January and speaking of their inclusion in the festival, frontman Tim Rogers said: "The band wanna pay homage to our beautiful capital and automotive chicanery."

Similarly, Hoodoo Gurus will hit the stage on Saturday, 9 January and singer Dave Faulkner said he has wanted to perform at Summernats for some time.

"I've been wanting to make it to the Summernats for years but family commitments in Perth have always prevented me - until now! With the Gurus playing a gig there next year I've got the perfect excuse," Faulkner said.

"I wouldn't call myself a rev-head exactly but I have only ever owned V8s. Need I say more?"

While the Friday night headliner is expected to be announced in September, fans are promised a spectacular experience.

Just last year Summernats broke its own Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous burnout, with more than 100 cars smashing the previous tally.
