Staff caught consuming illicit drugs.

A 72-hour closure order has been imposed on the Imperial Hotel in Sydney after bar staff were allegedly caught consuming illicit drugs.

According to an official statement released today, two bar staff working last Saturday night were charged with drug offences after police observed the workers taking ecstasy before continuing to sell alcohol to patrons.

Patrons at the venue were also caught in possession and under the influence of illegal substances, while inspectors were also offered illicit drugs.

The Erskineville venue has come under increasing scrutiny in the past two months since the venue came under new management, which has included repeated drug detections, intoxication issues and ongoing disturbance complaints.

The Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing (OLGR) Director of Compliance and Enforcement Anthony Keon says that despite repeat offences, the venue has failed to implement change.

"A situation where bar staff and patrons are openly consuming drugs at the venue, and where there have been repeated drug and intoxication issues, is completely unacceptable and shows that the venue has been operating with a complete disregard for its obligations and responsibilities," Keon said.

"Without significant and material changes to the management and supervision of the venue the likelihood of further illegal activity occurring at the venue is extreme, and the only appropriate action is to close the venue."

Newtown Local Area Police Commander, Superintendent Simon Hardman said this incident should serve as as a message to Sydney venues and business owners in the area: "We will actively pursue any venue where illegal activity is thought to be taking place".

The hotel was ordered to close from 7pm last night and will not re-open until 7pm on Monday night.
