Gertrude Street gets a makeover.

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival makes its return to Melbourne next month for the eighth year, as it transforms the popular Fitzroy street into an illuminated outdoor art gallery.

Over 40 sites of artwork will light up Gertude Street at the free exhibition from Jul 10-19, which includes video packages, bright lights and colour-shapes arranged on footpaths, shop windows and more.

This year's festival which is presented by TheMusic, will introduce a new feature, the Mentorship Program, which aims to create opportunities for up-and-coming artists who will have their work on display.

Festival Director Nicky Pastore says of the program: "We are really excited about introducing this brand new initiative."

"[It] will not only provide artists to receive one-on-one mentoring but also develop the creation of new site specific artwork."

Other highlights this year include The New Vanguard exhibition at Seventh Gallery and Wheel Of Fate which is a roving theatre performance that leads the audience on a 'choose your own adventure' around Gertrude Street and surrounding areas.

The event will kick off each night at 6pm during its run and conclude at midnight.
