WATCH: Foo Fighters Serve As Last Musical Guest On David Letterman

After a 33-year career, comedian and Late Show host David Letterman wrapped his final episode ever tonight in New York in front of an emotional audience.

And serving as the show's last ever musical guest was none other than rock heavyweights, Foo Fighters, who Letterman personally picked as he cites them as his favourite band of all time. 

The band performed their classic hit Everlong in black and white suits to close out the show which is also a favourite of the 68-year-old TV presenter as video footage and images played underneath to show some of Letterman's most memorable and iconic moments throughout the years. 

In what is a testament to the bond between the band and Letterman, Foo Fighters cancelled upcoming appearances to assure they could perform on the final episode, which they have played on many times before. 

As well as taking part in a week long residency at the show in October last year, a more sentimental time came when Letterman asked Foo Fighters to perform on the show in 2000 as the first musical guest in his return to television for the first time in five weeks after being off TV screens due to open heart surgery.

Meanwhile, a slew of celebrities turned out for the farewell episode and took part in the final 'Top Ten' segment made famous on Letterman's show, called "The Top 10 Things I've Always Wanted To Say To Dave".

The final show can be viewed on Australian screens on Channel Ten at 9:45pm AEST. 

Letterman closed out the program for the very last time with a simple, yet heartfelt: "Thank you, and goodnight."
