Peter Dinklage & Coldplay Recap The Violent History Of 'Game Of Thrones' With Smooth Crooning

So THAT's what a song of ice and fire is

Fan-favourite Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage has joined forces with veteran beige-rockers Coldplay and the good folks behind annual charity Red Nose Day to release a new musical clip in which he croons about being one of the longest-surviving characters on the notoriously bloody HBO fantasy series.

The clip is part of a wider celebrity campaign from the Red Nose Day camp, arriving in the wake of Anna Kendrick's tongue-in-cheek "IndiAnna Jones" reboot sketch that surfaced earlier this week, but we'd approve of this even if there wasn't a good cause behind this collaboration, not least of all for the excellent "man for all seasons" wordplay alluding to Dinklage's continued on-show survival as other cast members have come and gone, which tickles us way more than we're comfortable admitting.

The song's music and lyrics were composed by Coldplay, if you couldn't tell, while Dinklage's self-assured refrain — "I'm still going strong" — is as comforting as it is perilous, since it's not like book-series creator George R. R. Martin visibly gets a kick out of stomping on his readers' hearts or anything.

You never know, this one charitable act might not escape unpunished in the grand scheme of things… but until such time as Lady Irony smacks us across the face (given Martin's writing schedule, there's simply no telling when that could happen), at least we can continue to enjoy the very cool, very alive Tyrion Lannister amid the high-stakes turmoil of the Seven Kingdoms. Hopefully his sixth-season arc gives him a little more opportunity to flex those musical chops.

After all, if the ensuing kerfuffle of this week's episode (Google it) was deemed a good plan, who's to say there weren't talent shows in Westeros? Lest we forget, there's at least a healthy scene for Icelandic post-rock bands, and Coldplay drummer Will Champion even once popped up as one of the house musicians at the infamous Red Wedding, so like we said — you just never know.

Red Nose Day will be held tomorrow, 21 May, in the United States. Australia's 2015 equivalent is on 26 June.
