This year will mark the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day.

And to commemorate the special milestone, Australian rock singer, Tex Perkins has teamed up with AFL legend Ron Barassi in a new song inspired by the occasion.

The former frontman of The Cruel Sea has taken a break from his current national tour with songwriter Charlie Owen to lend his voice to the gripping tune, led by his brooding voice and acoustic guitar, as well as a special cameo by the Australian Welsh Male Choir.

Meanwhile, Barassi gives a heart warming spoken monologue towards the end of song, which was also co-written by comedian Matthew Hardy.

The Melbourne based comic, who has cemented himself in the UK comedy circuit in recent years, was inspired to write the song after feeling homesick while living in England.

Executive producer of the new tune and Melbourne icon, James Young said iTunes sales for the track will go to the Legacy charity, and it has also been RSL approved.

Young, who is also the owner of the city's famous rock club, Cherry Bar, spoke to TheMusic.com.au about the inspiration behind the project.

"This year is the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli and we were looking for a 'hero song'".

"For Legacy to approve it, who often knock back very well known Australian singer songwriters, was very special".

He went on to confirm that Perkins will perform One Minute Silence at the MCG on Anzac Day during the annual AFL fixture.

It will no doubt be a momentous occasion to debut the track in front of a live audience as the event, one of the biggest on the sporting calendar, averages a crowd of over 85,000.

The official video clip will be shown on the big screen at AFL matches in the lead up to 25 Apr.
