The campaign went viral overnight

Music blogger Izzy Combs has emerged overnight as champion of viral campaign #freetomove.

The movement is an attempt to start a conversation about creating safe, harassment-free spaces for music lovers, particularly young women.

The opinion piece by Combs published on Stoney Roads yesterday describes a “black hole when it comes to talking about sexual harassment in the music scene”.

The piece goes on to outline recent, widely reported, alleged occurrences of sexual harassment in “social music spaces”, including the recent Luke Lazarus court case, and an incident at St Kilda Music Festival, where a man in the mosh pit reportedly ejaculated on a young woman’s back.

It cites the UK’s Good Night Out campaign as a benchmark for involving the industry itself in managing and preventing harassment in licensed venues.

The article and the ensuing hashtag act as a call to action, inviting the public to speak up for and support those experiencing harassment: “you have the power to step in and say something”.

Recently members of the music industry launched the #notON campaign to help stamp out violence against women.
