Announced in Sydney tonight

Twenty-three-year-old Melbourne hip hop artist Remi is $30,000 richer this afternoon after taking home the tenth annual Coopers AMP – the Australian Music Prize.

Awarded to the best local album of the past year – as adjudged by a panel of industry experts – Remi and collaborator Sensible J have received the honour for their Raw X Infinity album.

It is not the first time the album has been rewarded either, it won the $50,000 Carlton Dry Global Music Grant last year.

“It's absolutely crazy. We put everything we could into this album and to get this kind of recognition is amazing," Remi said. "I mean, we made this album in Sensible J's spare bedroom so to be nominated at this level is pretty mind-blowing.

“We really just want to say a massive thanks to anyone who has listened to it closely and supported us so far.”

The announcement was made at Paddington Town Hall tonight, with PPCA donating the prize money.

PPCA CEO Dan Rosen said, “On behalf of all at PPCA, it is an honour to present REMI with a cheque for $30,000 for what was truly a remarkable album and a worthy addition to the growing list of AMP winners that have left their mark on the Australian music scene.

“Congratulations to REMI and we hope this contribution from PPCA will provide further assistance in taking his music to the world.”

Raw x Infinity came out on top of eight other albums in the final shortlist, including records by #1 Dads, Chet Faker, CW Stoneking, Blank Realm, Laura Jean, The Peep Tempel, Caitlin Park and Total Control.
