The Cellar Bar is ready to rock and/or roll

Stalwart Melburnian venue The Cellar Bar – a local favourite for private functions and events over the past few years – has quietly expanded its purview to aspire to a regular, public live music program, giving Victorian punters another new space in which to give their gig-going tendencies a workout.

Squirreled away below St Kilda’s renowned Newmarket Hotel, with a stylish speakeasy vibe dripping from its velvet-clad surrounds, The Cellar Bar promises an air of elegance about its performances, though that could also be due to the $80,000 grand piano that inhabits part of the 250-capacity space.

Already, the space is hoarding some aces up its sleeve for its burgeoning live offerings, including a month-long residency this April for local funk outfit Brooklyn’s Finest, plus the return of respected local event Wakefield Fest next weekend, featuring performances from Britto, Lilting, Louis, Zain Mitchlan, Jackie V, The Gravy Tram, Hannah Kate, Deijah, Bridget Moylan and Amber Deague-Hall.

In January, the space hosted the Prince Of Wales’ Live’n’Local gig for the St Kilda Festival, featuring Khristian Mizzi & The Sirens. The space boasts a world-class sound system, stage facilities, and lighting rig, and, according to booker/publicist extraordinaire Cassie Walker, it’s only going to grow from here.

“We’ve got some nice little line-ups that have grown organically,” she told theMusic.com.au. “We’re taking it slow, letting it grow and ironing out any problems, and hopefully it’ll be a nice little operating venue!”

Further bolstering its credentials is the presence of a robust dining menu featuring creations from head chef Stephen Burke – essential for any bout of booze-fuelled revelry – and, naturally, its convenient and culturally vibrant location.

The Cellar Bar is open from Thursday to Saturday and, as you can probably tell from previous and future events, is sure to be a vital new addition to the weekly scene; head to 34 Inkerman Street, St Kilda, to discover all it has to offer for yourself.
