Lockout Laws 'Biggest Factor' In Adelaide Venue's Closure

Local haunt the Dog & Duck is shutting its doors after eight years of service

Long-standing Adelaide venue the Dog & Duck has announced that it has been forced to close, effective immediately, with the state's early lockout laws being cited as the "biggest factor" in making the decision.

In breaking the news on their Facebook page yesterday, venue representatives explained that since the introduction of the lockout laws in late 2013, the manner in, and frequency with, which people enjoy a night out has changed, to the detriment of their business. 

In addition, the organisers explained that the current economic climate has not helped their situation, nevertheless thanking patrons for their faithful attendance over the years.

"Dog and Duck, with a heavy heart, has to announce that as of today we will not be reopening," the reps wrote on Facebook.

"Many factors have come into play with this decision. The biggest factor to this decision is the lockout law, it has changed the way people party, it has pushed people to go to [their] local hotels instead of coming to town.

"The economic state this country is in also played a big part, there is less money to drink and party."

"We would like to thank all our loyal patrons for [their] patronage over the last 8 years."

According to The Advertiser, the alehouse had recently undergone a $2.5 million refurbishment, which, in conjunction with the business slowdown, led to an unsustainable prospect going forward.

"Plus you've got landlords who are increasing rents in a decreasing market; they increased my rent by $30,000 in the last two years [while] my income has probably decreased by half a million," owner Wally Hodgens told The Advertiser.

Dog & Duck will be keeping its Facebook page active for the immediate future to give patrons a chance to access and/or download photos and memories from throughout the venue's lifespan. Head to their Wall to see more.
