There are no digital or on-demand plans in the works

Sony Pictures Entertainment have issued a short, crystal-clear statement regarding the future for James Franco and Seth Rogen's embattled political comedy The Interview: it's not coming out. Not now, not later, not in the United States... and not in Australia.

A one-line statement from a Sony Pictures spokesperson sent to The Music today reads: "Sony Pictures has no further release plans for the film."

Although a similar statement had been issued in the US previously, the affirmation looks to be the final nail in the coffin for the ill-fated flick's chances after The Interview's American December 25 release was cancelled following terror threats. Given the later release dates for the film in locations such as Australia and the UK, where it wasn't set to drop until next year, there was some hope an international release would skate through, but that has not turned out to be the case.

Similarly, the movie house seems less than enthused about the prospect of releasing the film digitally online, despite calls for them to do so from several commentators, including one-time Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
