Long-time saxophonist for The Rolling Stones, Bobby Keys has died at the age of 70.

The iconic band released a statement early this morning, saying they were "devastated" by Keys' passing.

"The Rolling Stones are devastated by the loss of their very dear friend and legendary saxophone player, Bobby Keys. Bobby made a unique musical contribution to the band since the 1960s. He will be greatly missed."

Keith Richards also posted several tributes to Keys, with one post reading:

"I have lost the largest pal in the world and I can't express the sense of sadness I feel although Bobby would tell me to cheer up. My condolences to all that knew him and his love of music."

The Texas-born musician had a long and etsteemed career, perfoming and collaborating with the likes of Buddy Holly, Bobby Vee John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. While widely known for his work as a touring and session musician, Keys also released a couple of his own albums.

His relationship with The Rolling Stones began in the '60s and he continued to tour with the band as recent as last year. He did not make the Stones' recent trip to Australia due to illness.

According to some reports, Keys was suffering from a liver ailment at the time of his death, though his cause of death has yet to be revealed.
