Custard Frontman David McCormack Wins Screen Music Award

Icehouse/Models keyboardist Roger Mason was also among the victors

David McCormack, established composer and the frontman of defunct long-serving Brisbane rockers Custard, has walked away a winner from tonight's 2014 Screen Music Awards, an annual celebration of the best and brightest in Australian composing for cinema and television.

McCormack picked up his award alongside composing collaborator Antony Partos for their work on widely acclaimed ABC series Rake, with their song Don't Let Go earning them the win in the category of Best Original Song Composed For The Screen.

Former Models/Icehouse keyboardist Roger Mason has emerged victorious, too, winning the Best Music For A Mini-Series Or Telemovie category for ABC telemovie The Outlaw Michael Howe.

Other particularly notable victors on the evening include multiple prizewinner Cezary Skubiszewski, who picked up wins in three categories — Best Music For A Documentary (Once My Mother), Best Soundtrack Album (The Broken Shore), and Best Music For A Television Series Or Serial (Serangoon Road, with son Jan) — and Oscar-nominated composer David Hirschfelderwho took his total Screen Music Award prize pool up to six with his win in the coveted Feature Film Score Of The Year category.

The award ceremony, which was hosted by Rob Carlton and featured performances from The Bamboos and Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes, was staged jointly by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers at Sydney's City Recital Hall, and recognised composers across screens both big and small in thirteen different categories.
