Songwriters will have until early December to submit their application

Preparations for the 2015 Queensland Music Awards are under way in earnest, with the annual prize-giving ceremony now open for submissions.

In collaboration with QMusic and APRA AMCOS, the yearly awards are an opportunity for musicians from every nook and cranny in the state to have their music heard by key industry figures, as well as a potential audience in the millions.

The rewards offered by success at the QMAs aren’t elusive – one need look no further than 2013 award winner Emma Louise, who picked up multiple gongs last year for the Export Achievement award (fitting; she was in Italy when the ceremony went down), The Courier-Mail People’s Choice Award for Most Popular Female, and Album of the Year, for her acclaimed debut full-length Vs Head Vs Heart. Although not nominated this year, Louise remains vocal with praise for the event.

“The QMAs are definitely a good form of support,” she told The Music’s Michael Smith. “It’s like a little family, actually; everyone at QMusic, and the QMAs are like, yeah — very supportive. If it wasn’t for the QMAs and Q Song, I’m not sure I would have met my manager or the family of people that I see now in Brisbane.”

The awards are calling for submissions from both published and unpublished original songwriters from around the state, with genres including Pop, Rock, Blues/Roots, Country, Urban, Folk/Singer-songwriter, World, Jazz, Electronic/Dance, Heavy, Schools (years six to 12), Children’s Music, and the second-ever iteration of the Music Video category.

Other Queenslanders to have previously snagged themselves prizes at the QMAs include A-listers such as DZ Deathrays, The Amity Affliction, Ball Park Music, Thelma Plum, Kate Miller-Heidke and MKO, with Louise standing out among the pack for her international domination of late.

The 2015 Queensland Music Awards will be held at The Triffid on Wednesday, March 25; tickets will go on sale early next year. The impending QMAs will once again coincide with the awarding of the Arts Queensland-funded Billy Thorpe Scholarship; applications are now open, available via QMusic’s website.

Entries for both the Queensland Music Awards and the Billy Thorpe Scholarship close on Friday, December 5. See the QMAs’ website for more information.
