Part of Sydney Festival

Hilltop Hoods and The Presets are set to headline a new event in Sydney’s Domain next year, with Beat The Drum as part of triple j 40th anniversary celebrations.

Taking place as part of the Sydney Festival – which will be announced later today – and in conjunction with festival promoters Fuzzy, The Cat Empire, You Am I and Vance Joy will also perform at Beat The Drum Friday 16 January.

It is set to be the biggest celebration of Australian music at the iconic inner-city location since the Homebake festival, which is taking another hiatus in 2014.

The whole concert will be broadcast live through triple j and streamed on the station’s website. According to triple j special guests will feature throughout proceedings, with acoustic arrangements and covers of legendary Australian tracks to be thrown in. Adaltia, Courtney Barnett, Remi, Owl Eyes, Tkay Maizda and members of Cloud Control have all been confirmed to make appearances.

Triple j’s Manager Chris Scaddan told theMusic.com.au that they’re kicking off the anniversary in Sydney because that’s where the station originally kicked into life, 19 January 1975.

“We’re marking the occasion from the birthplace of triple j. Double J was launched as a Sydney only station in 1975 before expanding nationally in the decades that followed.”

He added, “Live music and Australian music has always been a major part of the lifeblood of triple j. We’re famous for it around the world. So what better way to celebrate the milestone than with some of our greatest musical friends, playing live?… Everyone has been really keen to be a part of it. Plus there are plenty of surprises we’re yet to announce. It’s going to be a big love in, not just for triple j, but for the artists to celebrate their music, other Australian songs and have some fun on stage together.”

As well as the concert a TV documentary, book, CD release and exhibition will mark the anniversary throughout 2015.

Scaddan said details of those other elements will be announced in the “coming months”.
