The anticipated game drops today

Today marks the release of one of this year's most anticipated video games The Evil Within.
The survival/horror style game was developed by the man behind the iconic Resident Evil series, Shinji Mikami, and it looks — just like its epic predecessors — scary as shit! The graphics alone look pretty damn unreal and luckily for you, theMusic.com.au has nabbed an exclusive look at some of the initial art created for the game by concept artist Ikumi Nakamura.
Nakamura has also provided insight into each of the images, so learn, enjoy... or freak-out or whatever:

These are designs for Ruvik’s costume. In the beginning, he wore something that resembled a tuxedo but after thinking about his back-story, we felt it was probably more appropriate if he wore something that was tattered, like a rag. FYI, he’s not just an assassin from some game.

Tatiana is a character that has a special place in my heart. Her languorous attitude wore on many of the members on the team. In the beginning, she was just an ordinary nurse, but she was cut from the game. However I didn’t want to see here go, so I asked Mikami-san [Shinji Mikami] if there was any way she could be brought back and that’s why she is where she is now.

One of the earlier designs of Leslie. One of the reasons we made him look like a child is because we wanted the players to feel like they had to protect him or follow him. Despite his child like proportion, we made him look older because we wanted to convey that he’s really smart but that has caused him to age. By giving him contrast we wanted him to have his own identity.

In order to help people understand what they have to make, sometimes I draw my ideas in comic style. This one in particular shows a scene of the Keeper that I showed to our designers. I often write stupid jokes here and there but that’s just my style I guess.

Wouldn’t it feel spooky if Laura simply came walking towards you? What if this two-metre tall creature was lurking around a dark corner? Originally she had two ways of locomotion, when she stood on two legs and on all fours. She had more impact and left a stronger impression when she was on all fours, so in the end we decided that on all fours was the way she was going to appear in the game all of the time.

These are several variations of the sniper enemy. I made him white so that they can be identified from the rest of the enemies. Personally, I like the one on the right with the excessive number of pipes.

An idea sketch I did when I was asked to create an environment specifically to show horror. It was later in the project and I remember having a difficult time visualizing the concept. But I thought it would be interesting if the heads of The Keeper were the entire level.

Another sketch for the horror environment. This one is a mix of industrial atmosphere and red fog or mist.

A kitchen in the mental hospital. In the beginning, the hospital was going to be a lot bigger part of the game, so there was a lot of concept art for all of the different rooms in it.

Archive room of the mental hospital. In the earlier version of the story Sebastian lost his consciousness in the archive room. This is a visualization of that scene.

This shows a patient ward of the mental hospital. I designed it with the idea that it was more like a prison than a ward so the impression is that it’s a damp, uncomfortable place. The architecture itself is quite interesting in my opinion. But I wouldn’t want to encounter an enemy here, nor would you.

A mysterious experiment room. I thought it would be very scary if the only thing you could see in the entire level were figures of people moving on the other side of the curtains. I proposed the idea but it never made it into the game.

These are some pieces of concept art used for the loading screens. I tried to maintain the horror, even in the loading screens and chose several locations and objects that are in the game as the themes for them.

There are a variety of traps in The Evil Within. This is just one of them. It’s a trap that sprays acid from above.

The Evil Within is available on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 platforms. Check out the game's latest trailer now:
