Such great actors; such a questionable idea for a film

The Angry Birds movie has pulled off one of the most surprising casting coups in recent memory, snagging a who's who of comedy and the small screen to fill out its roster of actors lending their voices to the forthcoming mobile-game-turned-feature-length-flick, led by Jason SudeikisBill HaderMaya Rudolph and Peter Dinklage.

The first three are all alumni of Saturday Night Live, with Sudeikis having enjoyed the most cinematic traction so far through his films Horrible Bosses and We're The Millers, while Dinklage is known to all but the most staunch opponents of good television for his role as diminutive schemer Tyrion Lannister in Game Of Thrones.

Sudeikis has been pegged as central character Red, with Rudolph as "Matilda", Hader due to inhabit a villainous pig, and Dinklage shaping up to voice the Mighty Eagle.

That quartet will be joined by Josh GadDanny McBrideKate McKinnonTony HaleIke BarinholtzHannibal BuressKeegan-Michael KeyCristela AlonzoJillian Bell and Danielle Brooks, with featured appearances from YouTube icons Smosh (aka Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla) as well as Latin muso Romeo Santos.

The film — a joint production from Columbia Pictures and Rovio Entertainment — is based on the wildly popular mobile application of the same name (which has grown into a multi-platform franchise even without the film), and the quality of its cast is not lost on its executives.

"I'm extremely proud of this cast," said producer John Cohen in a statement. "Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they're surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today, and we're thrilled to have them all on board."

The Angry Birds film will be directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, who worked as storyboarders on Spider-Man 2 and Frozen respectively, with a script written by veteran Simpsons and The Office scribe Jon Vitti. The movie is scheduled for release overseas on July 1, 2016.
