Unexpectedly bumping Barnsey from top spot and holding Ariana Grande out

More Vance Joy More Vance Joy

Melbourne singer-songwriter Vance Joy has landed his debut album Dream Your Life Away at number one in its first week in the ARIA Albums Chart.

Although mid-week figures indicated that Joy may not be able to dislodge last week's number one (Jimmy Barnes' 30:30 Hindsight, this week at two), a late-week sales surge saw the former footballer get there. Joy even managed to hold off the visiting US popstrel Ariana Grande — in Australia this week, she was all over the media, her album My Everything bulletted back up to number three.

Other debuts in the Albums Chart this week include: Ryan Adams' self-titled set (in at ten); El Pinto by Interpol (11); Nothing But Trouble by The Wolfe Brothers (13) — the Australian country act's second album, both now achieving top 20 status; Listen by The Kooks (15); Goddess by Banks (17) — this was the second highest new entry in Digital Albums Chart behind Joy (one), coming in at six; The Ocean At The End by The Tea Party (18); Lullaby And... The Ceaseless Roar by Robert Plant (22); Somewhere Under The Wonderland by Counting Crows (27); Siren Charms by In Flames (33); and Single Mothers by Justin Townes Earle (48).

Outside the 50, US electronic duo Odesza landed their In Return album at 58, faring a stronger debut than the much-hyped return of Death From Above 1979 — their The Physical World set landing at 74. Melbourne hipster duo Client Liaison came in at 76 with their self-titled EP, ahead of local alt-roots troubadour Steve Smyth, coming in at 80 with Exits.

The announcement of some Bluesfest sideshows around Australia by The Black Keys was enough to set their Turn Blue album back up the charts, from 86 to 30, while saturation coverage of Kanye West's tour saw Yeezus fly back into the top 100 at 31.

In the ARIA Singles Chart, Taylor Swift remains in top position with Shake It Off. The only Australian new entries came in the form of TV talent show contestants: current X Factor lad Dean Ray making the week's highest debut at 15 with Budapest and former South African, now Melbourne-based, serial TV talent contestant Nathaniel came in at 22 with Live Louder. Fellow serial TV talent show contestant Reigan Derry (Who? Well, remember Scarlett Belle? She was one-half of that duo with Tamara Jaber — post-Idol, pre-X Factor), missing the top 50 with Bang Bang - it lands at 53.
