It's nice to see parents maintain an interest in their children
Here's a touch of Saturday levity for you — Alaskan rock workhorses Portugal. The Man are currently touring the regions of the States, which wouldn't be worth a mention if not for the fact that their fathers — or, at the very least, Ford Carothers, papa bear to bassist Zach — have been deeply involved in the journey.
With each new stop, the band has posted a new installation of "Dad Facts" to their Facebook page, detailing information and history about the venues and cities/towns in which the band is playing in the way that only dads know how.
"Zach, I see you are playing at the The Greek Theatre in Griffith Park, Hollywood Ca. tonight," one, written by Carothers, begins. "I was curious as to why the venue is called the Greek Theatre. Mr. Griffith, who donated the land we now call Griffith Park to the City of Los Angeles, wanted to build a theatre similar to what would have been used for plays in Athens thousands of years ago...hence the name. Not real creative, but very descriptive!"
"Spuds, Tonight you play Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah," explains another. "As you know, our family lived in Sandy, Utah (south of Salt Lake City) from 1970 - 1978. I attended the University of Utah as did your Aunt Susan. I think Uncle Gar may have spent time there as well…I can’t recall for sure … I won’t boor [sic] you with history or geography, but I will tell you this … there is a very large 'U' on the hill above the University. It is my understanding that back in the day, college kids hiked up there and drank beer. As you can imagine, your saintly Dad would have no personal knowledge of this."

Aside from being impressively educational, including history and facts about such diverse locales as San Diego, Las Vegas, San Luis Obispo ("the first municipality in the world to ban smoking in all public buildings, including bars and restaurants"), Portland, San Francisco, Kansas City, and several other well- and lesser-known cities and towns around the States, the whole thing is actually incredibly adorable.
There's something super-endearing and heartwarming about seeing this kind of thing in action, and frankly it should become a mandatory requirement for future tour social media relations for everyone. We could learn so much.
