The stoner-doom rock icons arrive this December

More Sleep More Sleep

Californian stoner doom metal veterans Sleep have announced that they will complete their inaugural full tour of Australia this December while in the country for the forthcoming Meredith Music Festival.

The legendary potheads will kick off proceedings at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on Saturday, December 6, before hetting up to Perth for a show on December 8, Adelaide (December 9),  Brisbane (December 11), and Meredith (December 12) before saying farewell with their final appearance of the run in Sydney, at the Manning Bar, on Saturday, December 13.

Sleep broke up sixteen years ago, in 1998, and at the time were in possession of an unreleased epic, now referred to as Jerusalem or its original title of Dopesmoker – a more-than-an-hour-long single-track release that was heavily dreamt about among the faithful for years before it became a reality upon the band’s reconvening.

They’ve since followed that up with The Clarity, their first new work since 1998, which is pegged by guitarist Matt Pike as “the lyrical follow-up to a lifetime of marijuana enjoyment”. Make of that what you will.

Back in the saddle since 2009 – after what was supposed to be a once-off reunion – the label headaches wrought by Dopesmoker are far behind them (London Records twice refused to release it), Sleep are arguably in the throes of something of a late-career renaissance, so it would behove you to suss out the Gig Guide or check The Music App to wrap your head around the full run of venue, date and ticketing details.
