If a story seems too good to be true...

More Tame Impala More Tame Impala

An allegation that Tame Impala had plagiarised parts of hit single Feels Like We Only Go Backwards from Argentinean pop star Pablo Ruiz has been exposed as a joke… by the people who wrote the first article with the claim.

Chilean music website Rata posted the article earlier in August, prompting websites like Pitchfork, NME and multiple Australian sources to report it.

The site’s editors have now revealed in a second post that yep, it was a bit far fetched. They made it up.

“Things sometimes take a course that you never imagined. What started as a funny discovery, went viral thanks to the magic of the internet,” a loose translation reads.

Editors Raúl Álvarez and Patricio Pérez also told Rolling Stone, “It was a joke. We were at a party and had that idea. Curiously, it was viralised pretty fast. We never thought we'd had this impact, and we're very surprised about it.”

They added, “Of course we think it's funny, but we hope there are no charges against Tame Impala. We actually like them a lot."

Tame Impala’s frontman Kevin Parker had previously pre-empted the admission, saying, “This is a joke, right?”

Once again the internet learns that if a story seems too goo to be true – it probably is.

…Now someone just needs to tell Pablo Ruiz, who having seen the songs side-by-side on the Rata site is allegedly now considering his next move with lawyers.
