The emo-revival pioneers' sophomore album drops next month
Hard-working husband-and-wife team Keith and Cathy Latinen — the creative core at the centre of fourth-wave emo revival heroes Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) — have been exceedingly generous in the lead-up to the release of the band's eagerly-anticipated sophomore LP, You Will Eventually Be Forgotten.
First off, the Latinens — who also somehow have the time to run beloved cult US label Count Your Lucky Stars Records — have been steadily revealing song lyrics from the album on Facebook for a few weeks now, to the delight of fans; Keith's immersive narratives and luscious linguistic acrobatics have long been a key EEIWALE drawcard.
Now, to back that up, they've made available for general release two tracks from the record — If It's Bad News, It Can Wait, which premiered on Stereogum a couple of weeks ago, and A Keepsake, which has just been freed from NPR exclusivity — and features guest vocals from Bob Nanna of genre forebears and resurgent veterans Braid.
Both tracks are unmistakeably Empire! Empire! in their execution, but display a palatable growth from the heady days of their acclaimed debut full-length What It Takes To Move Forward (2009) that tangibly builds on the band's voluminous body of EPs and other prolific releases they've put out in the five years since.
