Tommy Wiseau Of 'The Room' Is Getting A Sitcom

Oh, hi, Tommy

It's apparently spent close to a decade in development, but The Neighbors - the impending sitcom from Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, star and omniscient creative overlord of "the best worst film ever made", The Room - has a solid approximation of an airdate at last.

According to the show's new official site, The Neighbors will start airing in September, despite the present lack of broadcast details and incomplete info pages on the site. However, there are some pretty concrete pieces of material from which we can start piecing together the likely madness that lies ahead.

First, try and wrap your head around this frankly totally bizarre teaser clip, in which Wiseau plays a human-like thing called Ricky Rick, who is hosting a Tommy Wiseau underwear party in his neighbour's apartment, because that's a pretty normal thing to do.

Is it comedy? Is it tragedy? Is it a thinly veiled sales pitch for Wiseau's real-life line of undergarments? It's almost impossible to tell.

What we do know about The Neighbors, however, is its general non-underpants-specific premise, which honestly is no less bewildering, even including a character called Princess Penelope, who "creates a commotion" after sighting the ghost of her long-dead uncle, Prince Charles. Seriously.

According to the site, The Neighbors "is a sitcom about the relationship between a group of neighbours who live in an apartment building" — but it gets more insightful from there.

"The lead character is Charlie, the manager of the building. The tenants are a diverse group of personalities: all of different ages and backgrounds, constantly bringing their problems to Charlie and his secretary/girlfriend, Bebe. The character of Princess Penelope creates a commotion after she witnesses the ghost of her uncle, Prince Charles. It is a fresh and humorous look at human behaviour through different points of view."

Guaranteeing "plenty of surprises", the show says that its target demographic is "all-inclusive" (especially if you're into bad things, apparently).

The show's inaugural episode serves as an introduction to its core characters, but as a result the plot outline sounds more like the small-screen equivalent of a creative clown car:

"In the pilot, Mariana is obsessed about bugs in her apartment; Monica catches her boyfriend, Den, in bed with Patrick; Princess Penelope arrives and Darren serenades her with accompaniment from the other tenants; Richard becomes Princess Penelope’s butler; and handyman Ed prepares a birthday party for Bebe."

Well, we don't know about you, but we cannot wait.

Check out the "official trailer" linked to by the show's site — which has been online since freaking 2009, and in no way resembles the new clip. We're not even sure how the two pieces of footage could possibly be related. But hey, you weren't expecting normality here, were you?

Meanwhile, Wiseau's The Room co-star, Greg Sestero, was recently in Australia touring his 2013 tell-all book, The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside 'The Room', The Best Worst Movie Ever Made, which canvasses not only the well-documented and turbulent production process of Wiseau's passion project but the very real and genuine friendship that blossomed between the wide-eyed aspiring actor Sestero and the enigmatic Wiseau during, and after, the film's production.
