Big Day Out to return in 2016, Soundwave safe
Following yesterday's news that Big Day Out festival would not return in 2015, promoter AJ Maddah - who has handed back his stake in the festival to its American co-owners C3 Presents - went on triple j's Hack this afternoon to dicuss the festival's future, Soundwave and Warped Tour.
Here are eight things we learned:
“I ended up losing about $5.5 million on this year's festival. C3 probably lost a little bit more.”

“The losses from BDO were a lot higher than expected… it wasn't a game changer, it was still within the range of expectations – [but] it was in the higher end of the range.”
Lees told Hack: “It's a very dysfunctional arrangement with AJ being in the driver's seat…he's a mega-dickhead and it's proved to be the case. He's lead the race to the bottom and it's blown up in his face.”
Host Tom Tilley pointed out that earlier in the day a fan had tweeted in regards to a "mini Soundwave" coming to New Zealand. Maddah said it was "possible".
“As for Warped – there is no Warped international this year. They're not doing Europe, they're not doing Asia. We work on behalf of the people of Warped US and they don't have a line-up this year for international – they're just doing the US.
“I didn't want to have to comprise in any way. When we make the upcoming announcements for Soundwave they'll see that it's probably our biggest Soundwave festival – second biggest Soundwave festival after 2013. So I didn't want to compromise on the quality of Soundwave and I didn't want to compromise on what we deliver and this has been very helpful and C3 have been very, very good.”
“Soundwave was never looking doubtful.”
“We're not on an edge financially with Soundwave.”
“Big Day Out is alive, it will be back in 2016, and both myself and C3 are committed to it for it to come back in 2016. When it does come back in 2016 I think people will see the reboot of BDO version two.”
