'Grumpy Cat' Christmas Movie Gets Confirmed

12 June 2014 | 12:52 pm | Staff Writer

Ho ho no

It's well past April Fool's Day now, so it would seem that the overnight confirmation of the long-speculated Grumpy Cat film is totally legitimate, and just a little bit worrying.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be titled Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever and is set to air on US channel Lifetime, famous for its line of questionable TV movies, though there are no details as far as Australian broadcast is concerned yet.

The truly depressing prospect is no doubt geared to propel the world's favourite feline (sorry, Li'l Bub) to bona-fide small-screen superstardom as the station moves to frame this film, which original movies VP Arturo Interian describes as "a little Home Alone and a little Die Hard", as a "fun and irreverent" way for families to gather round during the festive season and reflect on how truly fucked we are as a species.

SpongeBob SquarePants alumnus Tim Hill is set to write the script alongside Jeff Morris, and it would seem not even friends and family are pulling any punches.

The movie will follow Grumpy Cat -- real name Tardar Sauce -- as a pet-store cat constantly overlooked and a 12-year-old girl who is able to communicate with her, and will reportedly feature cameos from other famous internet memes (fingers forever crossed for the 'Do She Got A Booty?' chihuahua or the IKEA monkey).

OK, on second thought -- that actually sounds kind of heartwarming, and like it could legitimately be a fun, enjoyable time, and not just a hollow exploitation of mankind's love of ugly furry things.

Still not sure how German terrorists and incompetent burglars fit into it, though.
