We Need To Talk About This Elton John/System Of A Down Mash-Up

As digital-age musical mash-ups evolve from simply layering Nickelback over Nickelback to yielding more complex and challenging configurations, it's worth taking a moment to pause, look deep within your soul, and ask: Have we gone too far?

Because the answer might just be a resounding 'yes':

That utterly baffling but kind of amazing concoction, friends, is Crocodile Chop, bringing everyone's favourite audibly incongruous acts – System Of A Down and Elton John, who released the 40th-anniversary edition of his acclaimed 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in March – together (at last) in the latest in a string of alternately breathtaking and completely bemusing mash-ups from the incredibly talented Neil Cicierega. 

For those unfamiliar with Cicierega's work, he is a comedian and filmmaker who originally came to prominence among the web-savvy with his series of Potter Puppet Pals videos, which popped up on YouTube back in 2006.

But since leaving behind the well-plumbed depths of JK Rowling's wizarding world, Cicierega has turned at least some of his attention to making seriously strange but undeniably fantastic mash-ups over at his SoundCloud page, which reveals two things: a) Cicierega seems to have a fascination – ironic or otherwise – with Smash Mouth, and b) Smash Mouth actually isn't all that unpalatable when woven into Modest Mouse. Go figure.
