Promoters were advised to shut down by Malaysian authorities

The Malaysian leg of the Future Music Festival has been forced to cancel the third day of its event following a drug overdose death.

A posting on the event's Facebook page reports: "In the interest of public safety we have heeded the authority's advice to not proceed with Day-3 of Future Music Festival Asia 2014."

The promoters were also keen to counter reports of multiple deaths at the festival this weekend: "This statement is in response to news reported in the media on the 5 alleged deaths associated with FMFA last night. As the health and safety of all festival goers are our primary concern, we have lodged an investigation into the media reports. As at 5.00PM on March 15, we can confirm that one death, and not five, took place on festival grounds on March 14."

Attendees took to the page to criticise promoters for cancelling the final day of the festival. Among the postings were comments such as: "Honestly, it is better for the organizers to just proceed with the event. This too last minute news are way too disappointing, especially for those who came from other countries to support this event. Yes we can understand a throughout investigation is needed, but would the police get the answer they need to even if the event cancelled today? Definitely no."

However the promoters stood firmly by their decision and have promised refunds, adding, "For those who have a Weekend or VIP wristband with left over credits, please keep your wristbands for refund purposes."

The identity of the overdose victim has not yet been made public.
