A punk rock celebration!

More Pennywise More Pennywise

Four of the more “classic punk rock” type bands on the Soundwave bill for 2014 have banded together for one massive Sidewave that lucky Melbourne punks will be able to get right amongst in a couple of weeks' time, as Pennywise, Stiff Little Fingers, Trash Talk and Authority Zero turn the Corner Hotel into one almighty mosh pit.

The four bands encompass different eras of punk rock, making it something off a tasting platter for anyone with a wide interest in the genre.

Pennywise are legendary Southern Californian punk rockers who very quickly established a solid relationship with Australian audiences. Their 25 years together has seen them pump out some serious great music, with ten studio albums to their name and thousands of sweaty live shows to boot. Seeing them in a venue like the Corner is a real treat for Aussie fans, the band are ghenerally packing out venues far larger than this.

The legendary Stiff Little Fingers formed in Northern Ireland in 1977, and if you know anything about Irish modern history, you'll know there was plenty of reason to be pretty damn pissed off. This made for some seriously vitriolic but also rather catchy punk rock. They have been a huge influence on so many bands of the modern era and having them in Australia is just so exciting.

Trash Talk may be far younger than the two headliners, but they are doing what they can to encapsulate the youthful spirit of punk rock from well before they were around. Their brand of old-school aping hardcore is furious and energetic and really, really great and anyone who saw them on Soundwave a few years back will know that the live show is out of this world.

Rounding out the bill is Authority Zero, a band who came out of the skate punk boom of the mid-90s and who incorporated reggae and ska influences into their brand of super catchy pop punk.

It all goes down on Thursday 27 February and we think you should seriously consider taking the Friday off work. Tickets are on sale from tomorrow morning.
