Americans cash in their Christmas gift vouchers
2013 will be a year that 17-year-old New Zealander Ella Yelich-O'Connor – aka Lorde – will never forget, and music fans are suggesting that 2014 will be equally as successful.
The young singer had a breakout year in both Australia and the US, and last week enjoyed a significant sales boost as fans cashed in gift cards they received for Christmas. Lorde's breakout single Royals sold 302,000 copies this week, a jump of 172 percent, and rose from sixth to fifth on the Digital Songs chart.
It wasn't the only track to have a jump this week, however, as Billboard's wrap-up indicates that every song on the 50-song-strong Digital Songs chart experienced a boost this week, with only four gaining less than 100 percent. One of the biggest sales jumps came from Katy Perry's Roar, which enjoyed a sales boost of 240 percent to sell 258,000 copies and rise to ten on the chart.
The holiday period means that Billboard's full charts won't be released until 1am tomorrow morning Australian east coast standard time,

The sales bumps were also felt on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with Lorde's debut Pure Heroine – which includes Royals – moving back into the top ten at seven (from 11) with a 14 percent sales increase to 78,000 copies last week. Part of that album push comes from iTunes discounting the album to less than $8 in the US as part of a 2013 'chart toppers' promotion.
Other albums to benefit from that push was Katy Perry's Prisms, up to five with less than one percent sales increase to 99,000 copies, Miley Cyrus' Bangerz up to eight (from 17) with a 26 percent increase to 63,000 copies and Imagine Dragons' Nigh Visions up to nine (from 16) with an 18 percent increase to 62,000 copies last week.
