Is the Melbourne singer-songwriter our next big thing?
Music recognition app Shazam has outlined the top ten artists it expects to break in 2014 based on its user interaction and the one Aussie on the list is Melbourne singer-songwriter Vance Joy.
The phone app provides users with the name and artist of a song by 'listening' to it play, and Billboard points out that when a user opens Shazam on their phone to identify a song one can assume the listener is thinking, “I don't know what this song is, but I like it.”
Having correctly predicted Gotye as the break out hit of last year's summer, the company has now outlined their list of 2014's ten most likely based on the 400 million songs the app's users are tagging.
“Originally from Melbourne, Vance Joy has already achieved success in his native Australia with his single, Riptide, and is set to break globally this year,” the service says of the local singer-songwriter.

Vance recently performed at the ARIA Awards, and Riptide is currently climbing the ARIA Singles Chart once again as a direct response. The track comes from his EP God Loves You When You're Dancing.
The other nine artists Shazam is predicting are, in alphabetical order: Action Bronson, August Alsina, Banks, Jhené Aiko, Kid Ink, Lucy Hale, Martin Garrix, Rich Homie Quan and Sam Smith.
