Here's what we reckon:

A DAY TO REMEMBER

These lords of pop mosh love Australia, probably because of the huge amount of love we show them. They've been affiliated with Soundwave for many a year now and they find themselves right at the top of the second announcement in 2014. It's well-deserved, if you caught their performances in Australia earlier in the year you would be well aware that these guys thrive on playing big stages to big crowds.

MASTODON:

They destroyed at the 2012 event and now Mastodon, who are bigger than ever, are going to bring the fury to Soundwave all over again in 2014. They have a new live record about to be released, which will serve as a good warm up before seeing these behemoth metallers – who just about everyone seems to like – blow minds on the festival stage. An incredible band for anyone who isn't scared of loud, heavy music.

PENNYWISE:

It has been a wild ride for Pennywise over the past few years, but all that matters now is that they will be at Soundwave 2014 with Jim back behind the mic and scores of anthemic punk rock songs to blow punks, both old and young, away with. Since the 1990s they have had an affinity with Australian audiences, which is bound to continue for a long time if their relationship with Soundwave stays strong.

PANIC! AT THE DISCO:

They are adored and hated in pretty much equal measures by punters in the punk rock, emo and , let's face it, pop scenes. But you've gotta hand it to Panic! At The Disco, they've managed to reinvent themselves musically a few times and retain not only a big fanbase, but a pretty impressive grasp of pop songwriting. Album number four Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die! isn't a hip hop album, but it's heavily inspired by the genre; you'll hear plenty of it at Soundwave next year. And yes, the exclamation mark is back and has been for some time.

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL:

So Soundwave didn't get Queens Of The Stone Age, but that doesn't mean that Josh Homme doesn't want his stamp all over this shit. He most likely won't actually be appearing with Eagles Of Death Metal, the band he formed with his buddy Jesse Hughes, but the songs the band play have Homme's pop-nous and rockin' snarl all over them. Hughes is one motherfucker of a frontman and will probably make plenty of ladies happy and dudes angry while he's out here. One thing is for sure, they will provide a good, fun, rockin', light-hearted counterpoint to what is bound to be a day packed full of rather angry music.

JIMMY EAT WORLD:

Soundwave favourites. This is the band who filled in at the last minute a few years back when My Chemical Romance pulled out and absolutely dominated in front of a massive crowd just before the night's headliners. They're still adored by the emo set and still making solid records 20 years after starting the band.

THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN:

It seems that with every record this band keeps becoming more and more popular while retaining their ultimately very abrasive, strange and heavy as fuck style of music. They're brilliant musicians and they put on some of the most insane live shows you'll ever see. To be honest we were a little worried we'd not see them at Soundwave again, but here they are on the back of lauded One Of Us Is The Killer album from earlier this year.

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS:

Here's one for the punk rock nerds and older punters, Stiff Little Fingers were an Irish punk rock band who existed for just over half a decade in the late-70s and early-80s and they became a seriously huge influence on a lot of the early pop-punk and skate punk bands (who, in turn, influenced the newer breed). While only half the band as it is now were in the band at the start of things, it's still an absolute coup to have legends such as these on the bill. Go along and learn something, kids!

BLACK VEIL BRIDES:

Hollywood based rockers Black Veil Brides are pretty great exponents of modern hard rock packaged up in the ridiculousness of glam rock excess. Basically, they're great fun. The band might cop a bit of shit for the way they look and perform, but those who love them really love them and the band have no apologies for doing things on their own terms. Whether you love them or hate them, they're coming!

SUICIDE SILENCE:

They jumped the gun a little earlier this week, which made fans of this Californian deathcore band pretty damn happy. This isn't just any old tour; this is solid proof to Australian fans that this band has bounced back after the tragic death of their former frontman Mitch Lucker. Now led by Ediie Hermida from All Shall Perish, the band are working on a new record which will be out just after Soundwave, meaning we'll probably hear a bunch of new shit early next year.

ZEBRAHEAD:

If you dig the kinda music that was in surf movies in the late 90s then there's a good chance you'll dig Zebrahead. Proved to Australian audiences they were not only still in existence but actually pretty good back at Soundwave 2012 and it's unsurprising to see them on the bill again.

I CALL FIVES:

The band that a kid on twitter announced sound much like you would imagine a band that some kid on twitter is stoked to announce. Nothing wrong with that, but it's very modern, polished pop punk that young people love and Soundwave are pretty good with bringing to Australia. Sugary hook, big arse guitars and no doubt plenty of singalongs to be had when you're getting down (respectfully) in the pit.

DEFILER:

Deathcore is serious shit these days. Yeah bands have been doing it for years, but it's reaching a new level of popularity at the moment and California's Defiler are one of the bands bringing the classic death metal sound together with the more modern and super popular metalcore sound. They've put out a couple of records and seem to be building a pretty strong following; far from the biggest or best band on here, but they'll make some of the true believers pretty happy.

DEVIL YOU KNOW:

A bit of an unknown entity, to be honest. But given Howard Jones' incredible work with Killswitch Engage for so many years, and the fact that the other two members are from bands like All Shall Perish, Devolved and Fear Factory, we're confident they'll have the goods. We're lucky to see them so early on in their career – could it be the beginning of something very special? They've already signed to Nuclear Blast, so we're guessing it'll at least be heavy.
