Woodford Folk Festival organisers are facing their fears away

Woodford Folk Festival organisers have released the 2013-2014 theme and poster for the New Year's holiday festival, this festival season marking the event's 28th event.

Spanning from Friday 27 December 2013 to Wednesday 1 January 2014, the Woodford Folk Festival have quite a few things to celebrate, most of all, announcing the new these for this year's event: facing our fears away, and the lineup announcement date planned for Monday 21 October.

According to Festival Director Bill Hauritz, the theme aims to free souls from inner monsters, inspired by the Mahatma Ghandi quote: “The only devils in this world are those running around in our own hearts, and that is where all our battles should be fought”.

“Each year we've looked for a central festival theme that helps us envisage how our ceremonies and indeed programming will take shape. Finding universal themes and applying these to festivals is not easy” said Hauritz.

“We saw some wonderful children's drawings of their monsters and Ghandi's quote seemed to pull it all together for us.”

Akin to the theme, the festival has announced a new initiative called the Monster Project, utilising Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay children's monster drawings, completed in August, with three of the images chosen and recreating as giant puppets for The Monster Parade at Woodford.

Artist Gavin Ryan provided the pretty swish, and very appropriate monster poster image for this year's festival, Woodfordia's General Manager Amanda Jackes calling the design “the best yet”.
