Cut Copy today unleashed a new track to the world. However, only at specific points in the world.

The Melbourne electronic music-makers released a statement revealing that Free Your Mind was accessible only at six points around the globe: Mexico City, Chile, the UK, Detroit and the California Desert in the US and Western Australia.

The statement claims fans need to “journey” to the exact locations that they have marked on Google Maps to unlock the track via cutcopy.net (advising that you need your smart phone's Location Services on).

While the Australian location for listening to Free Your Mind is listed as Moora – nearly 200km north of Perth, the UK destination is a small town in South Wales. The North American sites are found at Church Street in Detroit and off a Californian desert highway in Cabazon. In South America the map co-ordinates take you to Mexico City, Mexico and Santiago, Chile.

Fan reaction on Cut Copy's Facebook page has varied. Those who claim to have made the trek have posted rave reviews: “so amazing,” “song is the bees knees”. Others have vented frustration at “bands doing this shit” – with one post asking for someone who has been to listen to “leak the song… record the song, upload, profit”.

The band's last single was also issued in an as-exclusive manner, with an estimated 100 vinyl copies (according to a posting from their label on YouTube) of Let Me Show You Love pressed and made available at Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival.

The co-ordinates for Free Your Mind:

Detroit:  42.331225,-83.066366
California Desert: 33.921089, -116.761205
