Adelaide's Squatters Arms Hotel, a haven for alternative and underground rock music, has been forced to close after they were unable to pay their rent.

Run by Paul and Kate Calnan, the venue was a haven for underground scenes where, as one local described it, “the freaks, show ponies, punks, metallists and everyone else in between those genres can gather without prejudice or hate.

In a statement Paul Calnan said, “The landlords acted against us and took possession of the premises due to rent in arrears. At this time there is no saving the venue. We fought long and hard through many battles over the years, but unfortunately for us all, it's now over.

“My heartfelt thanks go out to all who supported us; punters, bands, promoters, friends and family. To Dick Dale who put his heart and soul into everything he's done for us all, remained loyal and unwavering from the beginning to the very end, there is NO WAY I stood a chance without your efforts.”

He added, “There is no way that I can recall all the bands that have played and supported us… we averaged about 500 bands a year! From the bottom of my musical heart, I'm so sorry we couldn't continue. I really appreciate everyone's well wishes and messages.

“There's so much more I want to say, but for now I leave you with a quote from Ozzy Osbourne. “Ya know, I love you all, But you're fucking MAD!”

As a result of the closure all planned shows are now being cancelled or moved to alternative destinations. The Squatters Arms was holding gigs up until late June, including its regular Thursday open mic night.

Local musician Dave Astaire told theMusic.com.au, “It is truly a sad day for us here as yet another rocking Adelaide venue closes its doors… The Squatters Arms was one of the few Adelaide venues who supported original music, paid their bands and treated us well.

“I played there a few times and the vibe was great. Even had a gig booked for August! Will miss the place.”

A Facebook event has been set up to raise money for the owners.
