Death, fire, medieval festivals and animated metal documentaries dominate Aussie crowdfunding this week.
Name: Barbariön: A Documentary... Mostly
Project: Documentary
Current Status: 75 pledges, 16.5% ($9,950) of $60,000 goal. 14 days remaining.
“Barbariön present themselves to the world with more hyperbole than almost anyone else out there,” says Dave Budge, director of a documentary he's looking to make about the Melbourne heavy metal group as they embark on a European tour this year.
A quarter of the documentary is proposed to be animated to go along with the fanciful nature of the group as the filmmakers look to cover the ground that exists between the drudgery of low budget international touring and the aforementioned hyperbole they spout at any given chance.

If you want to help make this film happen – and we reckon you probably should – you can chip in five bucks for a quick thank you or $10,000 to have “your wildest dream come true”. In between these two extremes there are chances to have glamour photos with the band; you can have a character based on you designed by the animators and featured as an extra in the film or just get a copy of the finished product in a variety of forms. They have a fair way to go, so check out the above trailer and help if you can.
Name: Crashdiet
Project: Touring support
Current Status: 345 pledges, 164% ($16,010) of $9743 goal. 10 days remaining.
Swedish glam metal group Crashdiet suffered a pretty nasty loss recently as their manager Michael Sunden recently died in a freak accident. The emotional turmoil this has caused is unspeakable and difficult to recover from and, what makes it worse, is that the band's finances are tied up in such a way that it could take years for them to recover their money.
So, in order to press on as an active band, they're hoping fans will be interested in helping them at least get through the tour they are set to embark on starting from tomorrow. You'll have to be quick to snap things up as some perks have already sold out; you can still get a laminate for life, allowing you access to every headline show they play anywhere in the world with festivals on a case by case basis, or you can grab a special t-shirt (that will have your name on it), get your name on their record or get a download copy of a live set.
The band make a pretty great sales point when they say, “Even if you don't live near anywhere we are playing, even if you can't see us on this tour…even if you don't like us…you'll be giving a fan a chance to rock out like you did when you listened to us or saw us play.”
Name: Dandelion Wine
Project: Touring costs
Current Status: 21 pledges, 22% ($1,247) of $5,500 achieved. 25 days remaining.
Self-described medieval/electro/triphop/whatever duo Dandelion Wine have the chance to head to Europe to perform at a number of festivals that will showcase their music to a bunch of likeminded people and get their name out there to people that really need to know about them! They've toured Europe a bit before and things are starting to pay off – they've landed some pretty good slots for a band of their style of music.
They aren't your ordinary kind of band though and transporting their instruments like dulcimer and bell citern can be pretty costly. So if you help them with their transport costs they'll give you cool things like postcards, tickets, CDs and vinyl. You can have your EP mixed by Nicholas for $1,000 or your album for $2,000, you can have a song remixed by the duo for $290 or you can go to their hotel room and watch them play a few songs with two friends for $320.
The most interesting perk available though is the chance to choose the hair colour of front woman Naomi Henderson for the entire tour. Yep, you choose what colour she dyes her hair and they'll send you a video of the dying process. Reckon that's worth $600? Get involved here.
Name: Ben Wells & The Middle Names
Project: Replace damaged equipment
Current Status: 52 pledges, 98% ($2,960) of $3,000 achieved. 18 days remaining.
Tasmanian indie-pop group Ben Wells & The Middle Names have built up a pretty solid fanbase around Australia after a bit of touring in the past year or so and they have no doubt been very much looking forward to making an album to get their music out to even more people. At the end of April they headed up to Queensland to go into the studio with Magoo to make that debut album, but, shortly before that, tragedy struck as their house/studio caught fire a few weeks ago and as a result the band lost between $7,000 and $8,000 worth of gear.
They have looked to their fans and friends to help soften the blow with a crowdfunding campaign that will allow you to enjoy exclusive content from the band, have them come around and cook a BBQ for you or, for $1,000, one of the band members will tattoo your initials on their person! Kind of a watered down version of last week's Arcane campaign.
They're almost at their goal, but keep giving – they lost a lot!
