Former guitarist for Aussie garage masters Lime Spiders and The New Christs, Mark Wilkinson, has passed away.

Brisbane-bred Wilkinson slung the guitar with the Lime Spiders in 1988 and 1989, before replacing Bill Gibson in the New Christs in the mid-1990s. It was a post on The New Christs' Facebook that announced the news to the greater public. The band expressing their sadness while giving him kudos for the songwriting smarts he leant to a bunch of the band's material during his tenure.

"Yesterday we got the sad news that Mark Wilkinson, former guitarist and songwriter with The New Christs, had passed away," the post reads. "Mark co-wrote some of the most amazing TNC songs (including the smashing "We Have Landed") and it is sincerely an honour to be in the band and to play them to people. Our thoughts are with his loved ones. He was a great bloke and he will be sorely missed."

Before joining these iconic bands, Wilkinson came from the fertile Brisbane punk rock scene that was so at odds with the Bjelke-Peterson government of the time. In a band called The Girlies, with whom he played from 1986-1988 and then 1989-1990, he was a vital part of the local scene.
