26 October 2012 | 3:13 pm | Dan Condon

We are streaming Songs Of The Third And Fifth before its release.

More The Mark Of Cain More The Mark Of Cain

It is time to dust off your loudest stereo, The Mark Of Cain are back with their first new album in 11 years and these guys have not really mellowed out at all since we last heard from them.

Songs Of The Third And Fifth has been a very long time coming for the Adelaide-bred trio and their hugely dedicated fanbase. Talk of a new record first started six years ago when drummer John Stanier was in Australia with his other band Battles. They go to talking about making a new record then but it wasn't until 2008 that the band had the chance to lay down the beds for the recording.

Personal turmoil in the life of John Scott got in the way of being able to focus on the band, but by May 2011 the record was ready to be mixed and that was finally completed at the end of last year.

Unsurprisingly, John Scott is straight-to-the-point when speaking about the record, but manages to completely hit the nail on the head with ease.

“This album almost harks back to our earlier days when we had more melody in our songs, it straddles in effect the earlier sound we had on Battlesick as well as the more riff focused hard grooves of This is This," he said in a statement about the record. "We believe this to be our best album. It encapsulates a work ethic of more than 25 years and shows a maturing of our sound without compromising the essence of the band. We still sound like The Mark of Cain."

The album is out on Friday, but you can listen to Songs Of The Third And Fifth exclsuively on theMusic.com.au right now.
