The airline will now allow certain instruments to be brought on as carry-on luggage.

In their quest to make travelling on their craft more appealing for touring musicians, Virgin Australia have relaxed another rule regarding luggage, this time in reference to carry-on items.

With the new rules, carry on items must remain within the same weight guidelines as before - each passenger is allowed a piece of luggage no heavier than seven kilograms - but now musical instruments, so long as they are no larger than 85cm x 34cm x 23cm (total linear dimensions 142cm) will be allowed on the aircraft. Each instrument will be counted as a carry on item.

The new rules mean that small musical instruments such as trumpets, flutes and violins, which can be quite valuable, can remain in the care of the passenger rather than being stored in the cargo bay of the aircraft.
